The variety of window treatments available means that choosing a type of window treatment is almost as labor-intensive as the installation itself. Window treatments are pretty much a necessity: not only do they contribute to the look of your room, but they can also protect you from exposure to the glare of the sun, hold warmth in the home and provide privacy. Of course, once you have decided on the type of window treatments you want, they will need to be installed. Learn the steps to follow in order to choose and install your window treatments.
In the past, windows were covered with sheers, overdrapes and valances. Today, having all three may be a bit too formal, but the choices can be mixed and matched in order to find the best results. For example, you might live in an area where privacy is not much of a concern, but you will still need to protect windows that face the sun from collecting heat during the summer. In this case, stick with two layers--if you have a set of blinds, an overdrape can consist of a simple valance or swag. Make the decision based on your needs and the style you wish to convey.
To begin, make sure that you have all of the right hardware for the job. If you are installing pleated drapes, you will need pins to hang on traverse rods, with a system of cords and pulleys to pull them open and shut. Tabbed draperies and pocketed curtains can be hung on plain or decorated rods, and both styles are typically sold with all of the hardware necessary to install them.
Make sure that everything is placed correctly. Drapes should hang down just past the window or all the way to the floor. Curtains should be about one and a half times the width of the window. Mark your mounting holes before installation to ensure that nothing is crooked.
When you are installing the system, be sure to follow the directions that come with it. Continental rods and blinds usually come with boxes that attach to the sides of the window and open up to accept the rod. Others clip together, while shutters require in-depth installation with attention to leveling.
